4Initial Impressions
By R Brown
Short and SweetThis tent appears to be a well-designed piece of equipment and I feel that I made a good choice with this purchase. Trail weight (tent, rainfly, poles) 5lb 2oz (2.33Kg). Ten tent stakes 4oz (115g), guy lines .5oz (19g), bags 2.5oz (73g), total 5lb 8.5oz (2.51Kg)IntroTypically I do not do a review until I have used the product for at least a few months or in this case a few camping trips but because there is only one other review at this time I will share my initial impressions. I was quite excited to receive this tent (I always am with new equipment) and set it up by myself shortly after the tent arrived. It took less than seven minutes and no instructions were required. The second time, again by myself, was accomplished under five minutes. In other words, the setup is quick, intuitive, and can be done solo. All of the seams were correctly double stitched and sealed in the proper locations, I was quite pleased. What I was looking forI wanted a three season tent with space for two plus enough room for extras like my dog, gear, etc. I needed one that was a little longer because I am 73" (186cm) and in some tents I would be touching the ends. Additionally, I wanted it to be light weight with plenty of mesh and have a door that could be used without disturbing those sleeping next to you.Why I chose this tentI narrowed it down to two tents, this one and the REI Quarter Dome T3 Plus. The T3 Plus trail weight (tent, rainfly, poles) is stated as 5lb 7oz (2.46Kg) and the Lightning by my scale is 5lb 2oz (2.33Kg) so the Lightning wins right? Not quite, if you are not over six feet than you probably could go with the T3 standard length which weighs in at 4lb 11oz (2.12Kg) making that one the weight winner. Also both have lots of mesh with the Lightning winning in that regard by a hair. With respect to the doors in my opinion the Lightning has an advantage here as well. By placing the doors at the foot and the head of the tent, obstacles on three sides just means that everyone goes through the same door. However if you were either of the T3s someone would have to climb over the other. As far as warranty coverage REI wins with their awesome warranty and if you live close to an REI there is no shipping cost, just bring it in. The deciding factor for choosing the Lightning was the price. The price of the Lightning is considerably lower than the T3 Plus. I was even able to pick the Lightning up while it was on sale making it less than half of the price of the T3 Plus, I jumped on it.What I have foundThere are almost always idiosyncrasies that can make or break a product and most of the time you are unable to determine these by reading the manufacturers description. That being said, I can make no further comments on the T3s but I can say that I think that I am going to truly enjoy the Lighting. Some of the things that I really like about this tent are things which I did not think would be a big deal. The H frame poll design is very straight forward and easy to set up. The whole tent is mesh so you have an unbroken view of the sky without becoming insect food. The D style doors are easy to open with one hand. The high sloping side walls create ample headroom. And finally, with the vestibules positioned as they are, if you sleep with your head or feet touching the mesh you will have plenty of clearance between yourself and the rainfly. This ensures that you and your bag will remain warm and dry.RatingA big smiling thumbs up and four stars. I reserve five for things that I consider revolutionary (to my world at least) so don't get the impression that I have any qualms with this product. The design is great, the workmanship is what is should be and I cannot wait to put this thing through its paces and let everyone know (hopefully) just how great this tent preforms in the field. If you have any questions about this product, leave a comment and I will answer you to the best of my knowledge.Bottom lineInitial impressions are very good and I think that this tent will last many backpacking trips. Happy trails.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~update~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~I have taken this on two weekend trips now and this tent is great. Tons of headroom and I was right about the vestibules keeping you dry even when touching the netting. The first trip I was able to sleep without the rainfly. Sleeping with a clear view of the stars minus the bugs was so nice! Two nitpicky things that I have found. The rainfly doors are a mirror image, ie they both open on the right side as you enter. Why is this bad? Suppose that you could only orient the tent in a North South direction but there was an amazing view to the NNE. You would miss it due to the doors. The second thing is probably just me not being used to modern tents but the fly creaks in the wind as it moves over the poles.

5sierra tent
By Eric Shuler
Sierra Designs Lighting HT 3 Man TentThe Lightning HT3 tent is a versatile tent in a small package I was amazed at how light the tent is at only 5 pounds and 3 ounces. Sierra Design uses the latest camping technology to reduce the tent to a light weight and yet have over 40 square feet of interior room. The tent is easy to set up if you carefully read the instructions. The first thing I learned the hard way is to stake the tent first as the instructions state. Not staking the tent first causes the tent to fall down as you try to put the poles in. Swallowing my pride I read the rest of the instructions. I never heard of a Jakes's Foot, an amazing device which connects the pole to the tent . Easily managed you merely roll the end of the tent pole into the hole and it is secure. The tent poles are color coded and made out of aluminum which is anodized by using the DAC green anodizing process. The DAC is safe for the environment. The poles are attached to the tent by clips. The poles are connected with ball clamp. This tent is light years more advanced than the Army pup tent I used 30 years ago while in Army basic training. .The material for the floor is 70D Nylon, body is 20 Nylon, and the fly is 40D Nylon. I was amazed at the amount of interior room in the tent. The sides of the tent do not curve in but are are straight for about 18 inches before they curve in. The result is that you will not feel cramped and it will easily hold 3 adults. The interior of the tent has three pockets for the campers. The ceiling is 46 inches which is more than ample. I am a six foot male and I found that the tent is quite roomy. There are two D type doors which make getting in and out of the tent quite easy. Where do you put your gear? The tent has a gazebo which you can store your equipment and protect it from the elements. The tent is a breeze to set up. I showed my 15 year old son, Stephen how to set it up and he mastered in one try. He even took it to the town library to demonstrate how to set up a tent on a camping trip. The retail of the tent is $ 349.00

5Easy Setup with plenty of room
By Nancy Chase
I ordered this tent for me last week and it was quickly shipped our 9 yr old set it up with no instructions in no time. I'm thinking ok wait for me Ill get a cup of coffee and we will set up together I went out as soon as coffee was done and its a keurig mind you that is always on, and to my surprise the tent was fully set up. He never read directions that is how easy it is! I took it to a scouting event last weekend thinking ok Ill get to set it up once again my nine year old took it upon himself to set that up while I was talking with others, so I can't tell you personally as an adult how easy it was for me but twice a 9 year set it up with no issues I think thats great. It is roomy I had 2 twin size mattresses in there but decided to take one out so we could put gear on the sides and besides out son has a self inflating mattress pad so he used that but that gives you an idea how roomy it is. There is a lot of head room in this. as well at takedown I was able to roll my sleeping bag, fold my air mattress, put all my stuff back in my backpack all this while my son was sleeping on his side which means I wont have to deal with the elements should rain occur. We had a beautiful sunny weekend however nite temp dropped to about 35-40 degrees there was no condensation, or sweat like some tents had this one is very breathable (if that makes sense) during day I took a siesta and took up the fly so it was mostly screen area for nice fresh air. Im very pleased I don't usually leave reviews but I just had too for other scouters out there. I don't do hiking and so some might say 5.3lbs is to heavy to carry but if you were to share the weight with someone else it might work in other words if I had to go as an extra leader and our 9 year old was approved to go he could stay with me without him having to hike his own tent in and of course Im sure dear hubby or older son would probably carry poles or something else to help with weight just a thought. I wouldnt specifically get this for hiking but for other scouting events I would not hesitate to order. The vestibules are roomy one is bigger than other. And as an adult who weighs about 215 it is easy to get in and out I have tried some tents that you had to crawl out and it was not easy to reach zippers but that is not the case her. It is well made as well. So go ahead order with confidence an you too will be a happy camper, amazon has fast shipped how can you go wrong!
