Mountain Hardware makes great gear!

We recently purchased a Mountain Hardware Trango 3.1 Mountain Hardwear Trango 3.1 Expedition Tent and have used it for a trip across country. We bought the Trango for its flexibility - we do everything from car camping to motorcycle touring to wilderness canoe tripping. The Trango is too heavy for serious backpackers but perfect for our use and not too much to portage good distance or pack on the back of our motorcycles. The tent seems tough enough to live up to its mountaineering design center; it has more guy tabs that we hope to ever need, but it is reassuring to know they are there. Poles are very easy to manage and the tent goes up in about 5 minutes or less with two of us doing the job; de-camping is a bit slower only because I am a bit fanatical about getting all stray dirt and sand off the tent as it is stashed. It seems the best way to preserve the tent material. As noted by others, there is plenty of storage space in the large pockets on the sides and the roof and the doors and vestibules are large and easy to use. Air flows well through the tent when you want it but it can be buttoned up very well when the weather is inclement. We had overnight temperatures down to the mid twenties and only needed medium-light sleeping bags.The tent had a pretty bad "chemical" smell when we unwrapped it. This went away when we left it open in our garage for a couple of weeks prior to the trip. I'm glad we didn't open it for the first time when we were on the road. The plastic windows had a whitish coating of some sort that made them better walls than windows. This washed off ok, although there is some residue still there that gives the windows a "steamed up" look. It will likely go away altogether fairly soon. The windows are a nice feature. The fly has numerous hooks on the inside, which we are guessing are to be deployed in very high winds, holding the fly more securely to the tent ... but Mountain Hardware are keeping their use a secret; we could find no explanation of their purpose in the owners manual. The manual and set-up directions are pretty poor in general; they are meager at best and are just not very clear. But these extra fly hooks are most annoying - getting them attached without a wind is rather a pain it would not be easy in high winds. That is, of course, unless you don't want them hooked onto the poles. They are not needed for regular overnight pitching of the tent, but have an uncanny knack for hooking themselves onto the poles as you take the fly off for de-camping. It's not a huge problem, but it is annoying. For our use we were very glad to have the three-man version. It certainly was not too large. Folks who feel you can easily fit three or even four into the tent must be "real mountaineers" used to pitching a tent on a cliff-face. For us more ordinary folks we find it a bit cramped for the two of us to get undressed and dressed in - we take turns. The space is adequate, but we were certainly glad not to have a third person in there with us.Overall a great tent; we have loved all the Mountain Hardware equipment we've purchased. Their gear does what it is designed to do and does it well. It's a great tent for our type of use. Construction quality is excellent. The only negatives a re pretty minor - the instructions and the fly hooks - but they moved this review from a five star to a four. We highly recommend this product to others, particularly those with a similar intended use profile to ours.
